Education is a human right, a public good, and a public responsibility. The United Nations General Assembly declared 24 January as International Day of Education, emphasizing the vital role of education for peace and development. The right to education is enshrined in article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, extends this right to include free and compulsory elementary education, with an additional commitment to making higher education accessible to all.

Education is the key to sustainable development. Recognizing its crucial role, the international community integrated education into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015. Sustainable Development Goal 4 aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030.
